Medicare To Evaluate $56,000 Alzheimer’s Drug

Medicare on Monday launched a formal process to decide whether to cover Aduhelm, the new Alzheimer's drug whose $56,000-a-year price tag and unproven benefits have prompted widespread criticism and a congressional investigation.A final decision isn't likely until next spring, said the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, or CMS, although an initial ruling could come in six months. Currently Medicare is making case-by-case determinations on whether to cover the medication, which is administered intravenously in a doctor's office.Medicare's announcement came on the same day that Democratic leaders of two House committees asked drugmaker Biogen to turn over reams of documents on how it developed and priced the drug, and on its dealings with government officials at the Food...

The Democrats' sweeping attempt to rewrite U.S. election and voting law stalled in the Senate Tuesday, blocked by a wall of Republican opposition to what would have been the largest overhaul of the electoral system in a generation. The bill, known as the For the People Act, would touch on virtually every aspect of how elections are conducted, federalizing the U.S. elections and taking away power from individual states to conduct their own elections. Many in the GOP say the measure represents a breathtaking federal infringement on states’ authority to conduct their own elections without fraud - and one meant to ultimately benefit Democrats.Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, of Kentucky said, "These same rotten proposals have sometimes been called a massive overhaul fo...
